vs.
Wow. I mean, Wow. How do you describe a 1-1 tie and make it seem exciting? How do you verbalize what took place on this night in this game? At 2:39 of the first period Maine scored their goal on a power play as Matthias Trattnig (Chris Heisten, Doug Janik) beat NU net minder Mike Gilhooly, remember that name, for the lone Black Bear goal. The passing on the offensive end that sent up this score was impeccable as Gilhooly had no chance to stop the shot from his left. with 26 seconds remaining in the first period Willie Levesque (Ryan Dudgeon) tied the goal as he poked one through the upper left side of the Maine net to beat goalie Mike Morrison, remember that name too.
The scoring may have ended, but the game was only about to open up. The two teams proceeded to rock Matthews Arena with on of the best displays of coast-to-coast action any hockey fan could ask for. Both net minders played out of their minds. Glove saves, pad saves, stick saves, shots off the post, shots off the side of the net, and that was all in one shift. The sizeable Maine contingent and the home crowd reached 4,266 - one of the largest home crowds in recent memory. No one left the building disappointed at the fact that his team got only one point in the standings. The Maine fans had to be pleased after the previous night's loss to Providence while the NU fans were happy to see the Huskies bounce back against a nationally ranked team after Friday's thrashing at BC.
It was only too bad that both Gilhooly and Morrison could not share the number one star honors as each deserved it. Morrison's dancing to the arena music during stoppages in play endeared him to many in the Northeastern crowd, and Gilhooly's masterful control over Black Bear shots impressed the Maine fans in section 51. These two teams go at it again in December 1 in Orono, Maine, then again on December 3 in Portland, Maine. The Portland arena is but two hours from Boston and it will be played at 3:00pm on a Sunday afternoon. Northeastern fans in the greater Boston area and the North Shore owe it to the team to make the trip for at least the Portland game.
Let's go Huskies!
