vs.
Coming into this game the Terriers were ranked number 11 in the nation and the Huskies were ranked number 12. Northeastern had not beaten Bu at home since 1998. Sean MacDonald had not scored a goal in two seasons, and Graig Mischler had not scored a goal this season. There was a full moon on this night. It was probably only a question of which dogs were going to howl the loudest. There have been a few spooky games at Matthews this season, so there would be little surprise if things got scary tonight. The Huskies offensive Mischler-Ryan-Selig line had not been heard from in two games, but they would make some noise this evening.
Boston University's Mike Pandolfo opened the scoring at 4:04 of the first period when, assisted by Dan Cavanaugh and Freddy Meyer, he broke in on Jason Braun for a three-on-one break away on a power play; John Peterman was serving his second consecutive penalty of the first period. Braun never had a chance as the defense backed up and played the BU forwards soft. The Huskies seemed to be a step behind the Terriers in the first period, never getting any real offensive opportunities as they were out shot by BU 13-4. The Huskies did show a determination not to be pushed around physically when Scott Selig checked Boston University goal tender Jason Tapp flat onto his back. It was a clean check that caught Tapp out of the net handling the puck as a BU defenseman help Selig in that direction.
In the second period the Huskies turned up the intensity and turned back the BU forwards by out shooting the Terriers 14-7. Graig Mischler scored his first goal of the season at 2:15 from Mike Ryan and Joe Mancuso. At 11:00 of the second, Sean MacDonald scored his first goal in a very long time from Willie Levesque and Mancuso. In a scrum in front of the net the Huskies put on a determined attack against BU goalie Tapp and beat him for the eventual game winner. The mood of the game shifted in the second period as the Huskies took run after run at Tapp and made their opportunities pay off.
In the third period NU came out for the insurance goals. At 13:36 Mischler scored his second of the game from Selig and Mike Josefowicz in another determined attempt to get to an open puck before the goalie could cover it. Finally, at 15:38 Chris Lynch scored his sixth goal of the season, and Mancuso tallied his third assist of the game along with Levesque. The Huskies successfully rode out the lead to the 4-1 win over the Terriers in front of 4,152 fans, the first at Matthews since the legendary Surge! game.
Jason Braun bounced back from his poor outing against Boston College last week by stopping 34 of 35 shots, some of which were definite scoring opportunities. In the third period, with the Terriers attacking, Braun somehow managed to stop what should have been an automatic goal when he raised his blocker from the ice and tipped the puck away. NU defensemen also did a great job of scooping out open pucks from in front of the net and sending them to the corners out of harms way. Jason Tapp also played well, stopping 22 shots at his end of the ice. The DogHouse responded well to Tapp. They rode him like a rented mule through the game, but then started the, "We like Tapp," chant; there is some odd bond between the most vocal cheering section in hockey and the goalie from the number one rival team. It was a full moon this night as well. The truth is out there.
Let's hope that what is past is prologue for the Beanpot tournament this season. The Huskies will need this type of effort to win the pot.
Let's go Huskies!
