The Huskies traveled across town to Conte Forum to take on the Boston College Eagles in the first meeting of the teams since last season's Hockey East quarter finals that BC won two games to none. Boston College was in top for as they out shot the Huskies 37-15 in front of a crowd of 7,480. Boston College's Krys Kolanos (Brett Peterson, Rob Scuderi) scored at 5:23 of the first period to open the BC offensive assault against NU goalie Jason Braun. Mike Lephart (Brian Gionta, Ales Dolinar) gave BC the 2-goal lead at 7:42 to extend the lead. Northeastern defenseman Rich Spiller put the dogs up on the board at 10:07 assisted by Trevor Reschny and Jim Fahey to start NU's offensive hopes. However, the Eagles got the goal back at 15:02 when Jeff Giuliano (Chuck Kobasew, J.D. Forrest) got the third BC goal.
The second period went scoreless as Chris Lynch was whistled offsides to disallow a goal. The officials were playing one man short as one of the assistant referees was injured in the first period and unable to continue the game.
At 7:31 of the third period Gionta (Lephart, Dolinar) extended the BC lead further. But the dogs came back to close the gap at 9:07 in a four-on-four when Ryan Dudgeon (Chris Lynch, Fahey) scored. At 9:53 John Peterman (Graig Mischler, Jim Fahey) brought the dogs to within one, and momentum seemed to shift in favor of the Huskies. However, the Eagles showed the offensive prowess that put them in the national championship game last season as Lephart (Gionta, Dolinar) scored at 12:40 followed by Tony Voce (Giuliano, Dolinar) at 16:33 to close out the game.
The Eagles ability to take control of a game late in the third was one of their trademarks against opponents last season, and that trait rose to the surface again on this night. The Huskies may have still felt the sting of last season's dismissal from the playoffs as the showed none of the poise that they displayed against Notre Dame and UMass-Lowell on the road. The dogs have showed a great ability to play well at home in Historic Matthews Arena, but they will go nowhere fast if they cannot skate with the big boys on the road. The upcoming road game against Providence will be a good place to start.
Let's go Huskies!
